Mistake to avoid

Planning as if it were a city: here opening hours, roads and calm set the pace.

Refugi Cap del Rec stands in Lles de Cerdanya, in Baixa Cerdanya, on the south side of Tossa Plana de Lles. The station places it at 1,960 metres, at the foot of the LLES nordic area. This is a day for someone sleeping at the refuge or in a lodging on the same shelf. Inside a two-kilometre radius the map has four places: the refuge restaurant, the station, Estany de l'Orri and the agency Pyrene Explorer. There is no second dining room on the list.

Give the morning to the station, 181 metres away. Eat at the refuge at midday: it is both the lodging and the only table. Spend the afternoon at Estany de l'Orri, 1.5 kilometres out. Come back to the same terrace in the evening. Pyrene Explorer, 2 kilometres along the Cap de Rec road, does not fill a spare hour. It is a multi-day expedition. Opening times are not set here. The notice on lles.net is the one that counts, and it can change.

Morning at the station

The LLES ski and mountain station is at Cap del Rec, 25726 Lles de Cerdanya, 181 metres from the refuge. It shares a website with the lodge, lles.net. On Google it sits at 4.2 from 786 reviews. In winter the station itself offers nordic skiing, ski mountaineering and snowshoes. The day pass and the other rates are published on that site. This guide does not copy prices.

Once the snow is gone, the station describes marked paths that leave from the refuge, including variant 10 of the GR-11, and it also names the Ruta dels Estanys Amagats and the Trinxat mountain-bike traverse. Those routes leave this radius. The walk that stays inside two kilometres is the one to Estany de l'Orri, and it belongs to the afternoon. The morning is the ground around the pistes: the meadow, the pines and Tossa Plana behind them.

The refuge and the station are the same stop. The station says Kilian Jornet took his first steps on the mountain and on snow here, and that his father, Eduard Jornet, was the guardian for some years. Vehicles can drive as far as Cap del Rec, according to the station's notice. The same note includes e-bike hire on the days that service is open. The rate is on the website.

Lunch

The only restaurant in the radius is the one at Refugi Cap del Rec, at Refugi de Cap de Rec, 25726 Lles de Cerdanya. Google lists it at 4.2 from 669 reviews and describes a mountain lodge at a ski station, with basic rooms, a restaurant and a terrace. If the dining room is open, lunch and dinner are here. There is no second table within a walk.

The refuge website says you have to book, and that the place can stay closed when nobody has booked. The notice on lles.net opens the café, the restaurant, the bike hire and the refuge from Friday to Sunday and on long weekends. It does not give a clock time. Turn up on a Tuesday without a booking and the kitchen may be shut. The menu is not in this guide. Read it on lles.net or at the door.

Afternoon at Estany de l'Orri

Estany de l'Orri is 1.5 kilometres away. The pin labels it a historic place of interest, at Estany de l'Orri, 25726, Lleida, and gives it 4.8 from four reviews: the mark is high and the sample is short. It is a small tarn, set among pines and boulders, in the hollow above the refuge. Joan Simon's photograph, from March 2008, shows it frozen. The state of the water changes with the season. This guide does not assign a time or a height gain.

An August review that the station republishes on lles.net describes a walk out to the tarn: the path was signed, the access was not complicated, and there were cows along the way. That is one walker's account, not an official grade for the path. In snow, the same outing depends on the station's conditions. If the day is wrong for walking, the afternoon stays on the refuge terrace.

The agency down the road

Pyrene Explorer — hiking in the Pyrenees is on the Cap de Rec road, 25726 Lles de Cerdanya, 2 kilometres away. It is a travel agency, not a viewpoint and not a dining room. Its site, pyreneexplorer.com, advertises a multi-day expedition through the Pyrenees — it talks about two weeks — for 15- to 18-year-olds. It starts and ends in Barcelona, and the base camp it describes is in Cerdanya, near 1,900 metres. The price, the dates and what is included are on that page.

For someone who only wants the day, the agency replaces neither the station nor the tarn. It fits when a teenager in the lodging is already booked on the expedition: the pin is two kilometres along the same road. It is not an afternoon outing, and the homepage does not sell it as one.

Evening

Come back to the refuge. The terrace and the restaurant are dinner, under the same booking and the same Friday-to-Sunday and long-weekend notice. There is no other venue inside two kilometres. If the dining room is shut that day, dinner is whatever was arranged when the bed was booked, or whatever you brought. The map has no other place.

How the day fits

The refuge and the station do not need a car: they are 181 metres apart. The tarn is 1.5 kilometres on foot. Pyrene Explorer is 2 kilometres along the Cap de Rec road. Leave the vehicle you drove up from the village of Lles at the refuge. The station says motor vehicles can come as far as Cap del Rec.

In winter the morning is the station, on snow. The rest of the year the morning is still that meadow and those pines, and the afternoon is still the tarn. The notice for the café and the restaurant speaks of Friday to Sunday and long weekends: a weekend is a safer bet than a Tuesday if you want a table. Read lles.net on the day, because the refuge can be closed when nobody has booked.

The refuge is staffed. The Catalan Wikipedia lists it as property of Lles town hall, with no unstaffed section. Neither the website nor the map describes step-free access: ask the refuge before you come up if you need it. The path to the tarn is a mountain path. The level part of the day is the ground around the refuge and the pistes.

To close: lles.net for the refuge, the station, the opening notice and the rates; pyreneexplorer.com for the expedition. The refuge photograph and the Estany de l'Orri photograph are by Joan Simon. The meadows and the view of Tossa Plana from Cap de Rec are by Enfo. All of them are on Wikimedia Commons, under CC BY-SA.
